There is no evidence, except what wife wrote in her memoir. So it's kind of bit difficult to say anything intelligent about that big unknown. But two highly intelligent writers writing at the same time, confronting the same phenomena, often do get to the same place. Even though you can't trace the exact line of influence. They're simply alive at a particular time, and things are happening to their consciousness and their perception and they getting to the same end.

Born in Liverpool, he is the author of several literary biographies including lives of Franz Kafka, Aldous Huxley, Bruce Chatwin, Andrew Marvell and Matthew Arnold, five collections of poems, and two novels. His biography of Matthew Arnold was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1997, and his biography of Aldous Huxley was shortlisted for the Marsh Biography Prize in 2003. His biography of Franz Kafka has been translated into nine languages.
