The american dream is the belief that you can rise up from modest circumstances and get to the top based on merit and hard work in this country. Many people born at the bottom of the social economic strata in this country tat, say, poor blacks, for example, in certain areas don't believe in it. They think is too much raceism, and there's too much pressure against them to be able to rise up. So basically, it seems like a lot of us are going to be stuck.
