Robin Jacobson is only mentioned once or twice in the pages of Levi Stros' book on totemism and in the savage mind. It does not seem to me at all plausible that either of those difficult but immensely influential and stimulating books could ever have been written, had not their author,. as he Levi Stros, like so many others, been caught up in his ideas. The full significance of Jacobson's contribution in this area has not yet been fully appreciated. For anthropologists, this is a crucial issue. What is the relationship between history, considered as a continuous sequence of happenings, from time past to time present to time future?
