The Indemnity and Haiti's Independence
The indemnity puts the United States in an uncomfortable political quandary. France has agreed to recognize Haiti diplomatically. And so the question is, what is the United States going to do? Right. Is it going to follow suit then and also extend diplomatic curacies to Haiti, or are they going to continue with their non recognition policy)? They doubled down on the non recognition policy because slaveholders and the enemies of black freedom say absolutely under no circumstances is this country ever going to recognize the nation of Haiti.
