Addington Simmons and the Oscar Wilde Trial

I wanted to write a novel that in some way explored late 19th century gay experience because I had seen the figure of Addington Simmons while reading a biography of Oscar Wilde. And what really allowed me to find my story was actually seeing the fact that Simmons who was married, he had four children. He began writing this book about homosexuality called sexual inversion in the 1890s with this man Havlok Ellis who also had this marriage to a lesbian as I say. So it was suddenly seeing the symmetry between two marriages that's allowed me to think that's how I get a novel out of this story. It allowed me to tell the story I wanted to tell which was about this gay man
