Peter Adamson: What have the Muslims done for us lately? The question is a serious historical puzzle. In the 7th to 12th centuries, the Muslims conquered a vast empire and produced scientists and mathematicians like Ibn al-Haitham or Al-Huaresmi. Sadly, starting in the 13th century or so, we have a situation of terminal decline, both politically and intellectually.
