The search for who we really are, and the idea that this is a fraught question goes back at least two millennia. Socrates put to death for undermining faith in the traditional gods, but he is basely saying, go on this quest to discover the real you. For these ancient philosophers, the real you i is a kind of transcendent thing. It's an impersonal intelligence that you become one with. And what iam curious about is how contemporary identity movements still have some of that kind of tang of these older religious formulations. I was lost, now i am found.
