Aretha's contract with Columbia was up and she didn't know what to do. She hadn't been into the studio in more than a year, but did have some songs she'd been working on. Jerry Wexler wanted to bring out the gospel sound in her voice so he hired musicians from Nashville, Memphis and muscle shoals. The first song they recorded that day was one that the musicians weren't impressed with at first.
