The first battery was invented over 200 years ago. It didn't produce much electricity and only gave power for an hour. The real game changer came when lithium iron batteries became available in the 19 eighties. They were light, rechargeable and ideal to fuel the boom in laptops and mobile phones. But battery experts like susan knew it was the start of something even bigger.
