Holman Hunt depicts the shadow of a cross that is looming over Jesus. The message he wants to depict for us is simply the inescapable reality of the cross. Everything in Jesus' life was pointing to the cross. His preaching pointed to the cross, his healingpointed to the cross and even simple mundane tasks like carpentry pointed to theCross. It is the cross of Jesus Christ that was the center of His life. For us it is to be the center of our lives.
