On November 25, 1941, the ship had been struck by torpedoes from a German U-boat off the coast of Egypt. The admiralty had really tried to keep this quiet. They weren't sure if the German High Command knew about the sinking and didn't want them to find out. One source even claims that the Royal Navy sent fake holiday messages on the deceased sailors before informing anybody they actually were killed.
