The Importance of D-Dimer in Emergency Medicine
D-dimer can't rule out cerebral venous thrombosis with certainty, but it may push your pre-test probability one way or the other. It's really up to your clinical judgment at that time whether to go for the D-dimer. We know that plain CTs have poor sensitivity for cerebral venousThrombosis. But if you're entertaining subarachnoid hemorrhage and pituitary apple plexi, you want a plain CT.
