This stuff has been around for 20 more years. Rotten Bush and Bright have an entire chapter in their multi-level book. It's hierarchical linear modeling. All of this stuff applies even if you have nested structured data, kids within classrooms. They walk through a really nice diagnostics in much the same way that I'm describing now with the growth trajectory.
