The clicking was most frantic in the morning before the heat of the day. If that's just the sound of a plant drying, why wouldn't it peak in the middle of the day instead of in the morning? The authors of the tomato study don't claim to know. All they proved is that the clicks could function as a signal if anyone wanted to receive them as such.
