The Relationship Between Reason and Disdiscovery
The third week of the Strauss course, as you've designed it, will be on reason and revelation. This is one of Strauss's perhaps most well known distinctions. For Strauss Spinoza is the person who at the peak made developed this argument by trying to show that miracles are impossible. He tried to refute revelation. But we thinking beings can't be satisfied with refutation by scorn, mockery and laughter. We actually need the argumentation and the demonstrations. So Strauss restores the possibility of revelation to a place of dignity.
