Blade Runner: A Metaphor for the Movie Camera
I think part of what is hard to understand about film and the relationship between projected or screened people and objects in real life is that it's not clear that representation is the right word. The material basis of movies, at least until recently, was essentially photographic. They seem to have a much more direct or immediate relationship to reality than would be the case when one looks at a painting of a real object or a real person. So it's something more immediate, something more direct than that, but still a fundamentally mysterious kind of experience.
