The History of the United States
In 1777, the US made its first official flag. The Union Jack was replaced by 13 white stars in a circular formation against a navy blue background. In 1818, President Monroe decided to add one new star for each new state added to the United States. So over the course of about 200 years, well up until 1960, another 37 states were added.
