Tone and Tonogenesis in Chinese
There's a continuum where complex tone systems, simple syllable structures and analytic typology all sort of go together. And Chinese is way far close to one end of that spectrum. You can dial it back a bit and have multi-syllabic words little slightly more syllable complexity and still have tone. So for example, you might get a tone split in syllables between whether they're following a voiced stop or a voiceless stop. I don't think it happens too often with simple, you know, two way systems, but with the more complex tone systems,. that's very likely to happen.
