The Impact of Oyster Shells on New York City
The city was basically built on oysters. There were an estimated three trillion of them in New York City's waters at the time that Europeans arrived. Liberty Island used to be called Great Oyster Island because there were just so many oyster shells underwater. Teddy Roosevelt, his family lived in Oyster Bay Long Island. It's sort of written all over the city.
