Mendelssohn's Sonata Form
Mendelssohn had a loving family, a supportive sister whom he adored and generally enjoyed success in his career as a conductor and composer. The first movement itself is a perfect description of both sonata form and how to mess around with it while still retaining its shape. What starts this symphony off is not actually the theme, but a rhythmic figure that will dominate the entire movement. There's a playfulness about this music that belies its tight construction.
