The Complete Giving of Oneself and the Teaching Against Divorce
The church teaches that divorce is not possible because it's a complete giving of oneself to one's spouse. When we do have couples who end up in this situation, they might seek a civil divorce which the church recognizes as simply a legal separation. But when that happens, what then happens is the person and the church engages in a process to determine whether or not the marriage ever existed in the first place.
