There are different methods of crossing the road in different countries and cultures. In the UK it's very important that you look very carefully before you step out into the street because drivers are not prepared for people just walking out into the middle of traffic. You've got to look both ways. What you should do is find the Zebra crossing and cross there because the drivers will stop for you at the Zebra crossings or at least they're supposed to. Here in Paris I'm not sure how it really works. There are Zebra crossings here in Paris but as far as I can tell the drivers haven't noticed them yet. They've been here for ages.
