How to Get Your First Clients

A number of LeanPub authors that we've interviewed for the podcast are independent types who've made the choice to go and create their own companies. I was wondering if you remember back in the day, how did you go about getting your first clients? There's a lot of work that you have to do for yourself to try and find clients,. But there's also that little piece of look of knowing the right person and that person thinking of you at just the right time.
