The Evolution of Political Theory in the Tudor Age

In 1567, Queen Elizabeth gave a speech to Parliament in which she asserted the age-old comparison of the body politic to the human body. The increasing tendency to base political authority on something like a contract was gradually chipping away at traditional foundations of monarchical rule. For Protestants, especially radical ones like the Puritans, true authority was scriptural, rather than rational or natural.
