The Mac way was more of like, you're holding down the button, you're not in a mode. And so many people voted with their feet and their wallet to say, I don't want to hold the mouse button down. So Apple eventually copied the windows way and said, okay, now from now on on the Mac, you can click the menus and they stay down. But practically speaking, not just at what people expect, but it is easier.
