The Battle of Aqualia

Gaius Marius and the Romans spent 170 launching armies across the Danube on multiple fronts in an attempt to remind the Germans who was boss. The results of these actions were mixed at best, but the tribes were able to deal multiple defeats to the Romans in skirmishes and battles north of the frontier. In 171 a mid-sized tribe was taken out of the fighting when their chief was killed in single combat by a rising legionary general named Valerius Maximeontus. This duel not only had the immediate effect of pacifying that one particular tribe, but its propaganda value to the Romans was enormous.
