Freemasonry in the Eighteenth Century
Masonry in the eighteenth century was largely a maritime phenomenon, with merchants, sailors and itinerant professionals carrying the craft to nodes on an atlantic network. Some women did become masons, even quite early on, but it happened in different ways and under different conditions in different places. And it remained a minority movement. So by the late 17 hundreds, you can see, freemasonry is really becoming a socially variegated picture in terms of class, occupation, religion, nationality.
