The Greek Strategy for 479 BC
Greek strategy for 479 BC is difficult to deduce with certainty owing to two facts. The tension between Athens and Sparta, reflecting their different strategic priorities, did not produce a clear-cut definitive strategy upon which both agreed wholeheartedly. This Athenian emphasis on land strategy in 479 BC may explain the very low profile Themistocles who had favored a sea offensive at the Hellespont after Salamis. And it would take compulsion to finally force them to advance into their army of hellots so that they were compelled to go to war unless they were compelled by Thucydides.
