Milton was most famous as the greatest advocate for and defender of republics and Republican theory. His arguments were derived from his reading of scripture, including rabbinic commentary on Deuteronomy. He says medieval exegesis had tried to reconcile texts or harmonize them in such a way that made it possible for kingship to be good.
