The Meritorious Cause of Our Salvation
The why question is the one that's answered with cause language for Aristotle and then a co-host. So you might think of it this way: You could ask why is that guy rich? Well one way to answer it is people give him a lot of money. That's an efficient cause. But there's another way of answering the question where you say why is that man rich? Because he worked for it. Because he deserves it. And here's what I'm going to suggest if I get this right. Christ is a meritorious cause. In some logical sense first, he makes us worthy. And then he's an efficiency cause. He actually gives it to us.
