For a long time, there was this paradigm that once something entered long-term memory it was basically there permanently. We can actually change and re-consolidate something that has already been consolidated into long- term memory to have a different emotional response or reaction to events. This is the basic underlying paradigm of something like cognitive behavioral therapy.
