Calvin Never Passed Out

In order to protect his young companion, they said that calvin had passed out and therefore could not remember the abduction on board the u f o. Calvin always remembered the female and the rest of the abduction but continued with the story that he did not in order to try and keep the media away from him. The secret tape is taken as evidence of the men's honesty - why would they do that if they believed they were speaking in private? I can think of several possible explanations, but could you or calvin shed any light on why he said this during their private conversation?
