The Biosphere: A Replica of Life on Earth
Biosphere is a complex web of ecosystems on Earth, like oceans, deserts, and forests. The idea of creating a replica biosphere was first attempted in 1972 by the Russians who built BIOS 3 in Siberia as they investigated ways to keep cosmonauts alive in space. Mark Nelson moved from New York to the Synergy Ranch in New Mexico in the late 1960s and worked alongside John Allen on multiple projects. He came up with a plan to build an enclosure where eight people would live cut off from the world for two years. All human waste would be treated and recycled inside the enclosure.
