Herbert Marcuse was a German American philosopher. He tried to marry phenomenology and historical materialism in the late 1920s. His lasting legacy was as a member of the Frankfurt School, but also as sort of the grandfather or philosopher of the New Left. The main question that he's trying to figure out is how do you live an authentic life?
