The Importance of Dig

In my version it says pierce. But when you look back at the actual Hebrew word is kara, which is translated here as dig or cut. I do know that there are some critics of this saying that this particular verse shouldn't be interpreted in that way. Well I mean it makes perfect sense to me when I look at it in context but you know that's just me.
