I think reading source code makes you to pick up some patterns, understand them and apply to your daily job. And around the time I focused on two things, reading, contributing whenever it's possible. Big chunk of improvements came actually from my interactions with Matasana Crypto Challenges building message pack library. This was fun that I implemented from the beginning base and coding how it works in elix here.
