In an open mike setting, the funniest thing a stand up can say is, i don't remember what to say. That brief moment of vulnerability and authenticity comes through us humorous. And you've got somebody on the stage who is vonderbilt and makes a mistake, and possibly even has adtto laugh at themselves. That's real, and it's entertaining. I always think of that too, in terms of that making a mistake, endearing yourself to the audience and making fun of yourself in the process.
