Is There a Theory of Consciousness?
There is a deep problem at the heart of consciousness science and that is that consciousness is not publicly observable. You can't look inside somebody's head and see their feelings and experiences. This really, I think, constrains our capacity to deal with it experimentally. What we ultimately want from a theory of consciousness is an explanation of why? Why? It's still in the realm of philosophy essentially. The subtitle of my book Galileo's Era is Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness.
