The studio fronted the money to pay the entire production tariff in the local petua. The resulting studio network negotiations were something out of a pinter play. Now, occasionally, for a big star, or what we used to call a major piece of talent, the network would agree to kick in a little money over and above the fee they'd already agreed to.
