Is There a Foundation to Morality?

I'm wondering if hobbs understands that hes not going to be able to get to the concept of morality within society if it's not this nasty, brutish and short senario outside. Unless we think that there is some moral force to the first law, to the dea of self preservation, it leads to horrible consequences. And then we could also ask ourselves if without the idea that we should use all our advantages to war when it's necessary,. whether there's a way to build up the legal and moral system the way hobbs does.
