The Darkness of the Rooms

The last of the bulbs went out, plunging me into blackness. The boundaries between nightmares and reality always felt alarmingly thin in the darkness especially when alone. As it did, something recoiled from a spot just behind my shoulder, a thin, hissing shriek, or cat-like, thin human. I plunged down those old steps too at a time, the light from my phone lurching crazily about the walls and floor. It took just a few frantic clicks and light returned in a bright white flash as the inbuilt torch burst to life. All I saw was an empty staircase leading upwards and turning a corner into shadow. There was nothing else there.
