Is There a Pro or Cons to Interfacing With an API?

I don't know how much you've worked with electronic health record systems. How open are they or how good are the kind of the APIs and other things for you to kind of build a tool and input into it? Do you have any experience with this? So I don't have direct experience with interfacing with them from like an API board of view. But one actually interesting approach here is that you can kind of get away without necessarily needing the API interface.
