The Battle of the Asapis

Alexander of Macedon told the Athenian Strateagoy that Mardonius was planning to attack at dawn. Passanias then grew afraid of fighting the Persians and suggested that the Athenians and Spartans exchanged positions in the Greek line, since they were familiar with them already. But when the Boetians found out what was happening and reported it to Mardonius, he immediately began to shift his positions so as to once again place the Persians opposite the Spartans. The Spartans though, did not respond to his challenge, and so Mardonius is overjoyed by his phantom victory.
