There's something mediaeval about this fear of different parts of ourselves. I feel like we're often just doggy paddling furiously at the top of a water ol trying to just hold on to control, whether personally or as a congregation,. As richard raw puts it, its transformation always goes order, disorder, re order. And i think when we were kids, we somehow had capacity for that scary place of just being honest about what is and trusting that we wouldn't stay there forever.
