The rise of the czars led to a debate about westernization in russia. A new generation of liberals came back from those wars looking for political rights. The failure of the decemberest uprising sent russian liberalism into abeyance. In response, czar alexander the second approved a slate of major reforms. This was a theory of imperial absolutism to stand against dangerous imports from the west.
