David Sylvester's Response to Tears
David Sylvester said he cried very easily, watching anything on film or TV. He wrote it always surprises me when intelligent people talk with self satisfaction about having been moved to tears by some work of art. The authentic responses are to feel pierced or set a light or elevated or torn apart. It really is basically either throwing the book across the rim in anger or sobbing.
