The Role of Breast Ultrasound in Lactational Mastitis
New data is showing that lactational mastitis doesn't originate from the baby's mouth, but from a natural imbalance in the microbiota of the human milk itself. Once those primary defenses are breached, organisms have that ideal culture environment in nutrient-rich maternal milk that leads to rapid replication. Risk factors for lactational breast abscess formation include first pregnancy at a maternal age greater than 30, pregnancy of more than 41 weeks and smoking.
