What Happened to Flight 19?
The Navy did a full investigation and concluded that the flight leader, a guy by the name of Lieutenant Charles Taylor, made a mistake. He saw some islands offshore and mistook them for the Florida Keys and that his compass stopped working. So he was trying to land using visual markers. But what in doing so, steered out into the open ocean and probably ran out of fuel and crashed and crashed.
