The stoics observe that all creatures have a natural affinity for themselves, for their own survival. But unlike animals, we humans do not have to remain bound to those instincts. A child's natural affinity will be lim ed to their self interest and this will cause them to cry when they 're hungry or uncomfortable without regard for others. As the child matures, they must become well posed to survive in other relationships beyond that of their immediate care givers. These include other members of society, of a larger nation, a town, and hopefully all of humanity.
