The Death of Democracy in Haiti
Francois Diwali calls an election for April 30, 1961, and there's only one name on the ballot. Papadock decides to overturn the Constitution which allows him a single term in office. He claims that not one Haitian has cast a vote against him. The opposition is vanishing. Trade unions are being eradicated. Student strikes are put down. So it becomes increasingly clear that opposition to Diwali means defeat. That's when the regime becomes totally brutal, absolutely paranoid. It becomes a beast.
